This, an early window hanging, shows very well the technique I use to make the bark of the trees. When I have waxed the various browns of the tree trunks, I screw the cloth up tightly, cracking the wax and even letting wax fall off completely in some areas. Then I work the black dye deep into the cracks. It looks a complete mess at the time and I have to repair any cracks on the stag itself, but when all the wax is scraped off and the piece of work ironed between paper, it looks just like bark.
