I did this sea study following a wonderful holiday on the Isle of Mull, staying with old school friends and all our children.
I always find it really hard to work freely, I’m tempted to be too careful when I’m putting the wax on but on this piece, I did very little drawing and drew free-hand with the wax. I used a wide brush to wax in the various different colours for the sea. The black silhouetted boats were the only bits of cloth left untouched at the end, so that meant I had to wax around each one – while still making sure the waves were continuous. It was not an easy task!
The stunning view was from Mull, looking across to the Paps of Jura, with the purple haze of the distant hills and the early morning clouds rolling in.
This piece is currently for sale in my ’50 Years of Batik’ exhibition
