When grandmother Katie, came to the studio and saw my work, she asked me if I would take on an unusual commission of six lampshades, one for her and one for each of her five grandchildren.
She explained that before each child went to sleep, she would say a special little message to them. This began with “Grannie loves …” followed by their name and their special phrase.
So we had … “Gracie, to the moon and back”, …”Elsie, as deep as the ocean”, …”Millie as big as the world”, …”Joshie, to the end of the rainbow”, and …”Sammie, as far as the stars”. Katie herself was symbolised by a dragonfly, which featured around each shade.
I made Katie a separate lampshade for herself, with all the grandchildren’s emblems, one on each panel. The children’s lampshades will be given to each of them as they get older. These will become family treasures and a permanent reminder to all of them how much their Grannie loves them.
