This was originally a design for a greetings card from a ‘European’ series. Ask any artist and they will tell you a bicycle is always a challenge to draw or paint. I made it even harder with my choice of colours. In Batik, the colours must go from light to dark. I wanted a typically dark green Dutch bicycle, set against a light stucco wall, so I had to wax the wall, in between the spokes and all around the bicycle wheels and frame, leaving the bicycle as a negative shape to be dyed dark green later. The tulips were a homage to Amsterdam and provided a splash of colour to draw the eye.
